A 16-year-old boy was convicted of rioting while armed with a deadly weapon after an assault at Buona Vista MRT station on September 1, 2024.
The incident involved six teenagers attacking a 17-year-old over a mistaken rape allegation.
The court has called for a report to assess his suitability for reformative training, with sentencing scheduled for July 17.
WHAT HAPPENED
According to a news report, the incident occurred on September 1, 2024, when the teenager, whose identity is protected by a gag order, confronted and attacked the victim along with five other teenagers. The group had accused the 17-year-old of raping one of their friends but discovered during the incident that the accusation was unfounded.
The group comprising teenagers aged 13 to 17, including two girls met the victim at the MRT station around 11pm. They then led him to a more secluded rail corridor near the station, where the assault took place, the report added.
During the attack, the teenagers began kicking and punching the victim while one of them recorded the assault on a mobile phone. At one point, another member of the group shaved off the victim’s eyebrows.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Hairul Hakkim stated: “At this point, (the 16-year-old) brandished a deadly weapon, a flick knife (with a blade measuring 9cm in length), and pointed it at the victim and asked whether the victim wanted to ‘try the knife’.”
Following the assault, the group made the victim lick the ground. The victim sustained multiple injuries, including lacerations on his left cheek, bruises on his back, and abrasions on his knee and elbow. He filed a police report the day after the attack.
The 16-year-old was convicted on March 24 and is currently in remand. A report to assess his suitability for reformative training was ordered on June 9, with sentencing scheduled for July 17.
If deemed appropriate, he may be detained in a reformative training centre, where he will undergo a strict regimen that can include foot drills and counselling.
