A Chinese national, Li Lanying, 52, was charged on Aug 28 (Wednesday) with causing the death of a pedestrian during a collision while riding a faulty bicycle. The incident occurred on March 8, 2023, along Martaban Road at approximately 9:10 PM.
According to the report, Li was navigating a “single lane two-way road” when she collided with 65-year-old Madam Lee Lai Kuen, who was attempting to cross the street.
Authorities allege that Li was aware that her bicycle’s rear brakes were defective, yet she chose to ride it regardless, resulting in the tragic accident.
In court, Li appeared visibly emotional, expressing her distress over her current family situation, which she described as “bad.” She revealed that she has a sick husband and is struggling with various familial issues.
When questioned about her defense, Li stated that she was uncertain about how to respond to the charges. Li was offered bail set at S$15,000 but noted that she did not have a Singaporean bailor to facilitate her release, the report added.
The court informed her that assistance could be sought through the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme.
Her case has been adjourned, with a pre-trial conference scheduled for September. If found guilty of causing death by a negligent act, Li faces a potential jail term of up to two years, a fine, or both.
