In a disturbing case of repeated physical abuse, a 16-year-old girl has pleaded guilty to orchestrating an assault on a 19-year-old man with special needs. The incident involved pouring boiling water on the victim, causing first- and second-degree burns. The assault took place in a hotel room over a period of nine days, and it was carried out by a group of four individuals.
According to the media reports, the now 18-year-old girl also admitted to consuming methamphetamine, commonly known as “ice.” She is scheduled to be sentenced on July 19 for the charge of forming a common intent to cause harm using boiling water, as well as the drug-related offense.
BACKSTORY
One member of the group, Muhammad Shahfakhry Mohamad Faizal, aged 22, was previously sentenced to five-and-a-half years in jail for multiple assaults on the victim. Two others, Putri Nuramira Aishah Rosli, 20, and a 17-year-old girl, were both sentenced last year to one year of reformative training. As per the Children and Young Persons Act, the identities of individuals who commit offenses while under the age of 18 cannot be disclosed.
The victim, who has a low IQ, was initially friends with two members of the group and was unaware of the other two. He joined the group at the Arton Boutique Hotel in the Jalan Besar area, where the offenders were consuming illicit drugs. The abuse began on January 17 of the previous year and continued until January 25.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Selene Yap revealed that on January 19, the 16-year-old girl set a kettle to boil and gestured for Shahfakhry to pour the boiling water on the victim’s back. This act was filmed by the girl who later pleaded guilty.
SENTENCING IN JULY
The abuse came to light when the victim’s sister discovered a distressing photo of a severely injured person resembling her brother on social media. She promptly reported her brother missing to the police on January 25. The subsequent investigation led the police to locate the victim at the hotel on January 26. He was then admitted to Singapore General Hospital in critical condition with multiple injuries, including chemical burns, slash wounds, and potential amnesia from a traumatic brain injury.
The victim’s injuries were severe enough to require alternative nutritional support due to his inability to consume food orally. The physical abuse ceased on January 25 after Shahfakhry, Putri, and the other girl realized the victim’s deteriorating condition. They purchased medication and bandages to tend to his wounds.
Upon receiving reports on the offender’s suitability for probation and reformative training, the judge will sentence the 18-year-old girl on July 19. The charge of forming a common intent to cause harm with a heated substance carries a maximum penalty of seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, caning, or a combination of these punishments.
