Nur Syafiqa, now 23, pleaded guilty to one count of acting as a member of a secret society. She also admitted to two traffic offences, according to ST.
Nur was charged in court last year.
Between May and July 2023, she posted a series of four videos chanting gang slogans, which collectively attracted hundreds of thousands of views before the police intervened.
The troubling behavior was first noted during a live stream in May when Nur chanted a gang slogan from her home in Sengkang.
In June, she repeated this offense, posting another video where she received virtual gifts totaling approximately S$83. Encouraged by this initial success, Nur sought further attention and revenue, leading to additional videos recorded in July at East Coast Park and on the Slingshot Singapore ride at Clarke Quay.
Her online activities caught the attention of authorities after a concerned citizen filed a police report on August 16, 2023, alleging that Nur was advocating for secret society involvement on social media.
On December 12, 2023, Nur was found riding a rented motorcycle without a valid driver’s licence in the Kaki Bukit area. A Traffic Police officer stopped her, leading to another charge.
She was subsequently charged in court in April 2024.
During her court appearance on September 6, 2023, Deputy Public Prosecutor Thaddeus Tan highlighted the reckless pursuit of notoriety, stating that Nur was motivated by boredom and a desire for monetary rewards through social media.
According to ST, the prosecutor said : “Encouraged by her past success, the accused decided to post another video of herself in July 2023 as she felt bored and wanted to attract attention and to earn more money… The accused recorded a video of herself outside (an East Coast Park eatery reciting a gang chant).”
She was arrested eight days later, on August 24, but was released the same day, only to reoffend later that year.
Sentencing for Nur Syafiqa Abdullah is set for October 24, 2024.
