In a recent court hearing, 19-year-old Wang Li pleaded guilty to a charge of endangering the personal safety of others with a rash act.
The incident occurred on January 29 last year when Wang, a national serviceman, was staying with his friends at a hotel room on the 40th floor of the iconic Marina Bay Sands (MBS) in Singapore, according to CNA.
According to the court proceedings, Wang’s co-accused, 23-year-old Marcus Lim Jia Long, dared someone to throw a plastic bottle from the balcony to the ground floor. Tempted by the offer of S$10 as he had no cash on him, Wang took up the dare. He filled an empty plastic bottle halfway with water and tossed it down from the balcony, with Lim capturing the act on video and posting it as an Instagram Story.
Regrettably, the bottle landed behind a car near a traffic light, causing a loud sound.
Concerned about being discovered, Wang hurriedly closed the balcony door to avoid detection. However, the recklessness did not stop there.
Marcus Lim further offered S$10 or S$15 for someone to throw another bottle down from the balcony. Encouraged by his previous action, Wang decided to take up the second dare.
This time, he threw another plastic bottle, filled to a quarter of its capacity, from the balcony.
Unfortunately, the wind blew the bottle towards some nearby trees.
The dangerous act came to light about a week later when an Instagram user, alarmed by the video of someone throwing a half-filled bottle from a hotel balcony, lodged a police report, providing video evidence of the incident.
During the hearing, the judge ordered a probation report for Wang and adjourned the sentencing until September.
For the charge of a rash act endangering personal safety, Wang could face a maximum sentence of up to six months in jail, a fine of up to S$2,500, or both.
