A 20-year-old man admitted in court to engaging in sexual acts with two underage girls, identified in court documents as V1 and V2. The incidents reportedly occurred on at least 20 occasions between November 2019 and March 2023.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE CASE

  • The offender, now 20, admitted to engaging in sexual acts with two underage girls (V1 and V2) on at least 20 occasions between November 2019 and March 2023, despite being under police investigation for previous offenses involving his ex girlfriend who was 13 to 14 years old.
    • In 2022, the offender and V1 began engaging in consensual sexual activity at various locations, including their homes and during movie screenings, during which he secretly recorded videos of their encounters.
      • The judge indicated that probation would not be suitable given the multiple serious offenses and called for a reformative training suitability report, with sentencing scheduled for April.

      DETAILS OF THE CASE

The accused, who has not been named due to legal restrictions under the Children and Young Persons Act, appeared in court dressed in a suit, showing little emotion as the details of his offences were read before Deputy Principal District Judge Kessler Soh.

According to Deputy Public Prosecutors Teo Siu Ming and Thaddeus Tan, the defendant first met V1 through a mutual friend in 2021 when she was just 12 years old.

A romantic relationship quickly developed, although the teen initially avoided sexual contact due to ongoing police investigations regarding a previous relationship with an ex-girlfriend, who was also underage at the time.

As per the Straits Times report, the teen was already under police investigations for having underage sex with his ex-girlfriend when she was 13 to 14 years old.

However, in 2022, the relationship progressed to consensual sexual activity, taking place at various locations including both their homes when parents were absent, and even during movie screenings.

In a troubling turn, the defendant filmed several of these encounters without V1’s knowledge on two occasions in 2022. The videos were discovered only when V1 checked his phone, leading her and a friend to confront him and demand deletion of the footage, which he complied with.

The couple’s relationship ended in early 2023, just before the case came to light.

During the proceedings, DPP Tan emphasized the need for reformative training for the young man, citing his age as a factor in considering rehabilitation over punitive action. He stated, “While the defence counsel said they were in a relationship when this happened, the sanctity of this relationship would have surely been violated.”

The defence lawyer, A. Ravidass, argued for a probation suitability report, highlighting the defendant’s supportive family presence in court and his academic achievements as evidence of his potential for rehabilitation.

The defence lawyer said : “My client is a youthful offender and his parents are here in court to support him. He has excelled in his studies and this shows that he is capable of moving on with his life.”

However, Judge Soh remained firm, stating, “Doing well in his studies is all well and good, but I’m confronted with multiple offences that are serious.” He ruled out probation as an option and instead called for a reformative training suitability report.

The case has been adjourned, with the young offender scheduled to to be sentenced in April.
