Singapore condemns the recent aerial attacks on Israel, which were carried out by Iran on 14 April 2024 in response to an attack on its diplomatic premises in Damascus on 1 April.
“These escalating attacks exacerbate tensions and further destabilise an already tense region” said MFA’s Spokesperson in its media release on 14 Apr. The Singaporean government expresses deep concern over the situation in the Middle East and the potential for the conflict in Gaza to spark a wider regional crisis.
Singapore remains deeply concerned about the volatile situation in the Middle East, and the continuing danger of the war in Gaza triggering a wider regional conflagration. Singapore calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid escalatory actions.
The focus should be on securing an immediate humanitarian ceasefire; the immediate and unconditional release of hostages; and the immediate, safe, and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance to affected civilians throughout Gaza.
- MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
In a prior announcement on Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) advised Singaporeans to postpone any trips to Iran due to the current security situation. It also urged Singaporeans currently in Iran to stay vigilant and keep a close eye on developments.
The lack of a diplomatic mission in Iran limits Singapore’s ability to provide consular assistance during emergencies, according to MFA. Therefore, Singaporeans in Iran are strongly advised to register with the ministry so they can be easily contacted if needed. For those requiring consular assistance while in Iran, they can reach out to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Duty Office at +65 6379 8800/8855 or mfa_duty_officer@mfa.gov.sg.
Precautionary Measure
Singapore Airlines (SIA) and budget carrier Scoot have decided to avoid flying over Iranian airspace following Iran’s direct attack on Israeli territory on April 13.
“As a precautionary measure, with effect from 1300hrs (Singapore time) on Apr 13, 2024, all Singapore Airlines and Scoot flights stopped overflying Iranian air space and used alternative flight paths” SIA said when asked by CNA.
“We are closely monitoring the situation in the Middle East, and we will adjust our flight paths as needed,” the spokesperson said according to CNA.
The Israeli military reported that Iran has launched over 200 drones and missiles at Tel Aviv since that date. As a precautionary measure, both SIA and Scoot have been utilizing alternative flight routes since 1pm Singapore time on April 13, according to a spokesperson for SIA.
Why Attack
According to The Washington Post report, Iran attacked Israel in retaliation for an Israeli strike on an Iranian diplomatic compound in Syria on April 1. The attack in Syria resulted in the deaths of members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including senior commander Mohammad Reza Zahedi and Brig. Gen. Mohammad Hadi Haj Rahimi. Hamas expressed support for Iran’s retaliatory attack on Israel, while Houthi rebels in Yemen also congratulated Iran on the assault. Israel has been carrying out strikes against Iran and its allies in Syria for years, but the April 1 attack was notable for its location in a diplomatic compound and the seniority of the targets.
