Bike Convoy Tragedy : Two Singaporeans Dead, Four Injured in Malaysia Crash

Two Singaporean motorcyclists were tragically killed and four others seriously injured in a horrific accident along Malaysia’s North-South Expressway early Saturday (March 23) morning.

The group of motorcyclists, a convoy of eight on their way to have their pre-dawn sahur meal in Muar, were struck by a container lorry at the 111.4 km mark of the northbound highway near Yong Peng, according to reports.

The accident occurred when one of the bikes in the convoy experienced a flat tire, causing the group to stop on the expressway’s emergency lane.

As they waited, the lorry lost control and crashed into them.

Police identified the two fatalities as Mohamad Firman Nordin, 26, and Mohammad Shahfiq Irman, 26, with Mohammad Shahfiq being a well-known winner of Malay talent show Anugerah in 2017. The injured victims were rushed to Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital for treatment.

“The accident is believed to have occurred when eight men were in a motorcycle convoy from Singapore to Pagoh, Muar, for sahur. One of the motorcycles had a flat tyre and the rider stopped his bike at the Yong Peng rest and service area,” Batu Pahat District police chief Ismail Dollah said in a statement.

“The other seven also waited in the emergency lane. Suddenly, a container lorry, coming from the same direction, lost control and rammed into them” he added.

The lorry driver, accompanied by an assistant, was unharmed in the incident. The driver, a 33-year-old man, tested negative for banned substances during a mandatory drug urine test and has been detained for further investigations.

A spokesman from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) stated that the Singapore consulate-general in Johor Bahru has been providing support to the affected Singaporeans and their families. He also expressed MFA’s sincerest condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a quick recovery for the injured individuals.

The community is deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life and our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.
