DETAILS OF THE CASE
The court heard that the man had a troubling history of abusing the trust of multiple victims, including his girlfriend at the time, who reported him to the police in April 2021.
She expressed concern that he might be keeping compromising videos of her on his phone after catching him secretly filming her during sexual activities on several occasions while she was blindfolded.
Each time, she forced him to delete the footage.
Following her report, police launched an investigation in June 2021, leading to the seizure of a smartphone and an external hard disk drive from the man. Forensic examinations of the devices uncovered at least 44 videos, which included a mix of upskirting and recordings of his sexual partners.
The man was found to have recorded two upskirt videos of a university coursemate in 2018 by discreetly placing his phone under her skirt while she was sitting opposite him or walking by.
Between January and July 2020, he filmed himself having sex with a second woman, also his girlfriend at the time, after blindfolding her. A total of four such videos were recovered, as per the report.
In June 2021, he used the same method to record another woman, a colleague with whom he was in a sexual relationship, resulting in seven videos being found.
The prosecution characterized him as a serial offender who targeted a wide range of victims, including strangers, friends, and even his own girlfriend, over a span of three years.
The court emphasized the seriousness of the offenses, which not only violated the privacy of the victims but also inflicted emotional harm.
Under current laws, anyone found guilty of insulting a woman’s modesty can face up to one year in jail, a fine, or both. For each count of voyeurism, offenders may be sentenced to up to two years in prison, fined, caned, or face a combination of these penalties.
A gag order has been imposed to protect the identities of the victims involved in this case.
