A man has been sentenced to six months in jail on Monday (July 15) after assaulting another man with a broken bottle outside a Korean restaurant in Tanjong Pagar.
Marcus Phua Han Sheng, a 30-year-old Singaporean, was dining with friends at Hansing Pocha when their group got into an argument with another group of patrons.
According to the report, Phua was initially trying to ‘mediate the situation’ and prevent a fight.
The argument escalated into a fight, during which Phua flipped a hot pot at one member of the group.
After the fight was broken up by restaurant workers and Phua’s friends, the other party left the restaurant. Still upset, Phua grabbed a soju bottle, smashed it against a table, and walked outside.
‘Mistaking the victim’ as a member of the other group, Phua struck him over the head with the broken bottle, causing multiple facial cuts. The victim had to undergo stitching for the cuts and was given nine days of medical leave.
Phua felt remorseful and made full restitution of the victim’s medical bills, amounting to S$4,857.10, a month after the incident.
Phua pleaded guilty to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt by means of a dangerous weapon likely to cause death. Deputy Public Prosecutor Shaun Lim Sheng Kang sought a jail term of six to eight months, noting that Phua’s remorse was a mitigating factor.
For his actions, Phua could have faced a maximum sentence of seven years in jail, a fine, caning, or a combination of such punishments.
