A 25-year-old male Indian national has been arrested for his suspected involvement in a shop theft incident at Changi Airport Terminal 2. The arrest follows a report of a stolen tie clip valued at $480 from a retail shop located in the transit area of the terminal.
According to Singapore Police, on 23 January 2025, authorities were alerted to the theft after the high-value item was discovered missing.
Surveillance footage from the shop revealed that the suspect had entered the retail store, browsed the merchandise, and discreetly slipped the tie clip into his left pocket before leaving without making a purchase.
Following the incident, police identified the man; however, it was determined that he had already departed from Singapore.
In a twist of fate, the man returned to Singapore on 28 January 2025 while in transit through Changi Airport, where he was promptly arrested by the police.
During the arrest, authorities recovered the stolen tie clip from his possession, police added.
The suspect is set to face charges in court on 4 February 2025 for theft in dwelling under Section 380 of the Penal Code 1871. If convicted, he could face an imprisonment term of up to seven years, a fine, or both.
The Singapore Police have emphasized their commitment to addressing shop theft incidents seriously, stating that offenders will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law. The police also reiterated their dedication to collaborating with stakeholders and the community to prevent and deter future cases of theft, ensuring the safety and security of retail environments in the country.
