A 23-year-old Indonesian man, Brilliant Angjaya, was sentenced to three weeks in jail after pleading guilty to sexual exposure on a Singapore Airlines flight.
The incident occurred on January 23 while traveling from China to Singapore.
District Judge Paul Quan described Angjaya’s actions as “inexplicable” and “inexcusable” during the sentencing, according to Straits Times report.
The details of the flight and the air stewardess involved remain confidential due to a gag order protecting the victim’s identity.
According to court proceedings, Angjaya consumed two glasses of champagne during the flight before going to sleep. After waking up, he went to the bathroom and decided to record a video of himself exposing his genitals to an unsuspecting individual. At approximately 4:45 AM, he returned to his seat and set his mobile phone to recording mode before unzipping his jeans and exposing himself.
The victim, who was serving in-flight meals, was shocked upon encountering Angjaya in such a manner and quickly averted her gaze. She placed Angjaya’s meal on the foldable table and left the area. The victim also noticed Angjaya’s phone aimed at her and promptly reported the incident to her supervisor.
When confronted, Angjaya initially denied recording the incident but later surrendered his phone to the supervisor. The phone contained videos of the act, including footage of the victim, prompting the supervisor to alert the authorities.
Angjaya was arrested before the flight landed at 6:45 AM.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Ng Jun Kai sought a sentence of four to six weeks, citing aggravating factors such as Angjaya’s intoxication and the nature of the crime being committed on a public transport vehicle against a flight attendant.
DPP Ng pointed out that Angjaya’s initial denial indicated a lack of true remorse, stating, “Had he been truly remorseful, he would not have lied to the victim’s supervisor.”
Angjaya’s lawyer, Mr. Navin Thevar, argued that his client was in a “troubled state” at the time and had consumed champagne in an attempt to sleep. After the incident, Angjaya apologized to the cabin crew and wrote an apology letter to the victim, which was presented in court.
In the letter, he expressed regret over his actions and acknowledged that his reasons did not justify the misconduct.
Judge Quan emphasized the heightened alarm caused to the victim in the context of a business class cabin, where flight attendants have more personal contact with passengers.
The judge rejected the defense’s characterization of the offense as a “highly inappropriate prank,” stating, “It was perverse enough for (Angjaya) to even contemplate how someone might react to his indecent exposure.”
Despite the seriousness of the offense, Judge Quan recognized Angjaya’s genuine remorse.
Following the sentencing, Angjaya was granted permission to call his father in Indonesia.
