A 37-year-old man was sentenced to four years and two months in prison for sexually assaulting his 12-year-old stepdaughter on four separate occasions.
The court also ordered him to receive eight strokes of the cane for his actions, the man cannot be named due to a gag order protecting the identity of his victim.

DETAILS OF THE CASE
The man pleaded guilty to two counts of molestation, with two additional similar charges considered during sentencing, according to The Straits Times.
The case came to light on March 22, 2023, when the victim’s mother noticed her daughter seemed distracted during classes. Concerned, she spoke to the girl, who eventually broke down and revealed the abuse she had suffered at the hands of her stepfather. Following the confession, the mother promptly filed a police report.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Santhra Aiyyasamy informed the court that the victim had initially refrained from telling her mother about the incidents due to her affection for the man, who had treated her like his own child.
“The girl was also worried about breaking up the couple’s marriage and did not want her family members to worry about her” according to ST report.
Court documents revealed that the victim first met the offender in late 2016 while he was dating her mother. They married in 2018, and he subsequently moved in with her and her five children, including the victim. During his time with the family, he took on caregiving roles, assisting with homework and preparing meals.
The molestation incidents occurred while the victim was home alone with the man. On one occasion, he molested her while she was lying on a bed using her mobile phone, shocking her with his actions. He later urged her to forgive him and not tell anyone.
The second incident took place in a car while the victim was seated in the front passenger seat during one of his delivery jobs.
As a result of the abuse, the victim experienced a range of emotional distress, including sadness, fear, disgust, and anger towards herself, along with insomnia and difficulty trusting others.
The man was arrested the day after the victim reported the abuse.
During police investigations, he acknowledged his actions but maintained that he treated the girl as his own daughter.
His defense team argued for a lighter sentence, suggesting that the offenses were not premeditated and requesting a maximum of four years in jail along with the caning.
The court, however, took a firm stance on the matter, acknowledging the serious nature of the crimes committed against a vulnerable child.
In a related note, it was reported that the man and the victim’s mother are currently in the process of getting a divorce.
