A man has been arrested for allegedly breaking into a dormitory room at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and threatening to kill a woman.
Myanmar national Kaung Myat San, 22, has been charged with trespass and criminal intimidation on Friday (Jan 19).
According to the report, Kaung has pleaded not guilty and expressed his intention to engage a lawyer, claiming that he had no intention of harming his girlfriend.
However, it is unclear what their relationship was. NTU has confirmed that he is not a student at the university.
The incident took place on January 17 at around 8pm at Binjai Hall, a student residence located within the NTU campus. Kaung allegedly threatened the victim, stating that if he could not have her, he would “have her in hell.”
As per the report, it is alleged that Kaung made threats to the victim, stating that if he couldn’t be with her, he would ensure they would be together in hell.
“I actually brought a knife, you want to see? What type of way (do) you want to die? If you want nice funeral, choke you will be better than stabbing you,” Kaung allegedly told the victim.
“You and your family don’t really talk, it will take at least three days for them to find out you are dead and by (that) time, maybe I (am) already in my home country (and) nobody can catch me.”
He reportedly brought a knife and threatened to either choke or stab her, saying that her family would take at least three days to realize she was dead and he would have fled the country by then.
NTU stated that support was provided to the student who was targeted, and urged the university community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to campus security.
“We urge the NTU community to remain vigilant, and to immediately report any suspicious person or activity to campus security. We are unable to comment further while the police investigation is ongoing,” an NTU spokesperson told in response to TODAY’s queries .
Kaung is currently in remand and is scheduled to appear in court on February 5.
If convicted of criminal intimidation, he could face up to 10 years in jail, a fine, or both. For the trespassing charge, he could be sentenced to up to three months in jail, a fine of up to S$1,500, or both. The police investigation is ongoing, and NTU declined to provide further comments at this time.
In a separate & equally disturbing incident, a 35-year-old Malaysian student allegedly sent threatening emails to NTU staff.
