A former teacher in Singapore has been charged in court on Thursday (Apr 2) with multiple sexual offences involving an underage student, marking the latest in a troubling string of educator-related cases emerging in recent weeks.
According to CNA, the Singaporean man, believed to be in his 30s, faces nine charges in total—six for committing indecent acts with a young person and three for sexual penetration of a minor.
Court proceedings are subject to a strict gag order, preventing the disclosure of identities or any details that could reveal the individuals involved or the locations of the alleged offences.
Allegations Spanning Nearly a Year
According to court documents, the accused and the victim shared a former teacher-student relationship, with the alleged offences occurring over an extended period between February and December 2023.
The charges outline a series of escalating incidents:
- Around Feb 16, 2023: The man allegedly kissed and hugged the girl, who was below 16 years old, in public.
- Between March and June 2023: He allegedly engaged in multiple intimate acts with her.
- On Oct 19, 2023: He is accused of further intimate acts and coercing the girl to perform a sex act on him.
- On Nov 2, 2023: The man allegedly performed a sex act on the girl and again had her perform one on him, alongside kissing and hugging.
- Around Nov 23, 2023: Another alleged incident of kissing occurred.
- Around Dec 21, 2023: He allegedly repeated the pattern of kissing, hugging, and making the girl perform a sex act.
The case has been adjourned for a pre-trial conference scheduled in May.
If convicted, the penalties are severe. Each charge of sexual penetration of a minor carries up to 10 years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both, while indecent acts with a young person can result in up to five years’ jail, fines of up to S$10,000, or both.
In response to media queries, the Ministry of Education (MOE) confirmed that the individual had been suspended in January 2024 and subsequently dismissed from service.
The ministry stressed that it “takes a serious view of staff misconduct” and will not hesitate to act against those who violate professional standards.
A Disturbing Pattern of Cases
This case is not isolated. It is one of at least four similar cases involving teachers and students that have surfaced in Singapore within the past month.
- Former Primary School Teacher Jailed
In late March 2026, a 35-year-old former primary school teacher was sentenced to 22 months in jail after engaging in a sexual relationship with a former student she had taught. The relationship later turned sexual when the boy was in secondary school.
After the relationship ended, she reportedly stalked the victim, calling him repeatedly and sending numerous emails.
- Teacher Accused of Grooming Student
In another case heard in March, a 41-year-old former secondary school teacher is on trial for sexual grooming and indecent acts.
Prosecutors described his actions as a “deliberate, calculated and persistent campaign of grooming,” alleging he made promises about a future relationship and even marriage to manipulate the student.
- Female Teacher Facing 26 Charges
Also in March, a 40-year-old former teacher was charged with 26 offences, including sexual penetration of a minor, grooming, and obstruction of justice.
She allegedly met an underage boy multiple times and committed repeated sexual acts, some reportedly occurring in a parked car.
Authorities confirmed she has since been dismissed from service.
- Separate Case: Online Exploitation
In another recent conviction, a 39-year-old ex-teacher was jailed for five months after engaging in sexual acts with a 15-year-old student during late-night video calls that began as academic consultations.
The abuse reportedly had long-term emotional consequences for the victim, who struggled with self-worth for years.
