A 17-year-old boy was convicted on November 11 of voluntarily causing hurt that turned out to be grievous, after attacking another teenager during a basketball game in Jurong West last year.
The assault took place at about 5.35 pm on December 17, 2024, at a basketball court near Block 559 Jurong West Street 52. The offender, then 16, had been playing in a match against a 15-year-old boy he had just met.
According to ST, during the game, the older teen repeatedly pushed the younger player. On the last occasion, when the victim asked why he was being pushed, the offender struck him in the face with his left elbow.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Suriya Prakash told the court that the victim sustained a facial injury which left a permanent scar on his cheek and required seven days of hospitalisation leave.
The offender, who cannot be named because of a gag order protecting minors, was convicted of one count of voluntarily causing hurt which resulted in grievous hurt, as per the report.
DPP Suriya requested that a probation suitability report be prepared for the teen before sentencing. The offender will return to court for sentencing on December 23.
