Six teenagers, aged between 13 and 16, have been arrested following an alleged joyride in a stolen vehicle, as reported by Shin Min Daily News.
The group, consisting of five boys and one girl, was apprehended on Tuesday night after returning the stolen car to the parking lot from which it was taken.
Car owner Huang Weilun had parked his vehicle in the Sengkang multi-storey car park around 7:30 PM on October 29. However, when he returned to retrieve his camera at 11:30 PM, he discovered that his car was missing, and instead found another vehicle in its place.
The owner immediately contacted the police.
While giving his statement to law enforcement, Huang heard the unmistakable revving of his own car’s engine. Shortly after, he observed the vehicle driving up to the second level of the car park where he and the police were stationed.
The car paused briefly before moving forward, at which point two officers intercepted the vehicle and instructed the teenagers to exit.
The arrested teens claimed to be residents of nearby Punggol and explained that they had intended to pick up friends for a joyride without any malicious intent. Huang expressed confusion over why they chose to steal his car for a trip to Sengkang.
Remarkably, he noted that the car had not sustained any damage during the incident and felt fortunate that no accidents occurred while the teenagers were driving.
In addition to the car theft, police discovered a knuckle duster and an e-vapouriser in the youths’ possession. In response to inquiries from AsiaOne, the police indicated that they received a report of motor vehicle theft on October 30 shortly after midnight at Block 457 Sengkang West Road.
“Five male teenagers, aged between 14 and 16, and a 13-year-old female teenager were arrested for theft of motor vehicle.
One of the older male teens, aged 16, is being investigated for possession of a knuckle duster, while the e-vapouriser-related matter has been referred to the Health Sciences Authority for further examination.
The police were alerted to the theft shortly after midnight on October 30.
The investigation is ongoing.
