Ril Iskandar Mohamed Gazali, a 32-year-old technician, was sentenced to eight weeks’ jail after pleading guilty to voyeurism, housebreaking, and criminal trespass at Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
On two separate occasions, Ril entered the NTU campus, once filming a woman showering in the toilet and another time trespassing into a female student’s dormitory, as per the report.
FIRST TIME :
The first incident occurred on June 10 last year when Ril filmed a 22-year-old woman showering in a toilet on the fifth floor of a student dormitory.
After entering two rooms on the fourth floor, he heard the woman showering and proceeded to film her through a gap in the door. When the woman noticed him, Ril fled but was later reported to campus security and the police.
WHAT HAPPENED : The victim, a 22-year-old woman visiting her friend at the university, was showering in the female toilet on the fifth floor of her friend’s block when Ril entered the building. He had previously attempted to enter two rooms on the fourth floor, thinking they belonged to female students.
Hearing the water running in the female toilet, Ril approached the cubicle where the victim was showering, placed his phone at the bottom of the door, and filmed her. When the woman noticed his phone, she shouted and Ril fled the scene. The victim informed her friend, and they reported the incident to a security officer on campus.
SECOND TIME :
A month later, on July 24, Ril trespassed into a female student’s room after finding a key fob outside. When the student’s friend confronted him, Ril claimed to be a friend of the resident. The incident was reported to campus security.
WHAT HAPPENE : On the evening of July 24, Ril once again visited the NTU compound after finishing work. While wandering around, he entered a building and discovered a key fob left on a shoe rack outside a room where a 22-year-old female student lived.
Assuming the occupant was not present, Ril used the key fob to unlock and enter the room. When the student’s friend from the adjacent unit heard the door open, she went to investigate.
Upon encountering Ril, she questioned his identity, to which he claimed to be a friend. Suspicious of his presence, the friend later learned that her roommate had not authorized anyone to enter the unit, prompting her to report the incident to campus security.
Ril’s actions were condemned by the court and he was sentenced to eight weeks’ jail on Monday (July 8) for his crimes.
For voyeurism, Ril could have faced up to two years in jail, a fine, and caning.
For housebreaking, he could have been jailed for up to three years or fined. For criminal trespass, he could have been jailed for up to three months or fined up to S$1,500.
