In a case that has drawn considerable attention, six youth cyclists are facing multiple road traffic violations after posting a video on social media that showcased their late-night stunts in Scotts Road and Orchard Road on May 10.
The cyclists, aged between 17 and 20, were seen in the footage swerving between lanes around 11pm, prompting law enforcement to take action.
According to ST, the six individuals appeared at the State Courts on October 9 to address the charges against them.
Their cases have been scheduled for a follow-up hearing on November 19.
Among those charged, 20-year-old Muhammad Aliyul Qadry Mohamad Razak is facing the most serious charges with a total of four. These include failing to keep to the left edge of the road, failing to ride in an orderly manner with due regard for the safety of others, cycling without a helmet, and riding a bicycle that was not equipped with a handbrake.
Another cyclist, 20-year-old Muhaidy Marhady, faces two charges for similar offenses: failing to keep to the left edge of the road and riding without a helmet.
Nineteen-year-olds Ahmad Noordinie Mohamed Noorshah and Muhammad Irfan Muhamad Noor each face charges of failing to adhere to the left side of the road and failing to ride in an orderly manner.
Additionally, two of the cyclists, whose identities are being protected under the Child and Young Persons Act due to their age, are also facing charges.
One is charged with failing to ride close to the left edge of the road, along with failing to ride in an orderly manner. The other minor faces the same two charges, along with an additional charge of using a mobile phone while cycling.
Under the law, first-time offenders found guilty of failing to keep to the left edge of the road, failing to ride in an orderly manner, not wearing a suitable helmet, or using a bicycle without a functioning brake can be fined up to $1,000, face up to three months in jail, or both. For those found guilty of using mobile devices while cycling, the penalties could be a fine of up to $1,000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both.
