A 77-year-old man has been sentenced to six weeks in jail for brutally attacking his wife during a heated argument that escalated over suspicions regarding a female beer promoter.
Low Poh Puay, also known as Edward, pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing harm to a person he was in an intimate relationship with.
According to Channel News Asia, the incident occurred late at night on November 10, 2022, when Low returned home after drinking. The couple’s dispute began when his 66-year-old wife confronted him over her suspicions about his interactions with a nearby beer promoter.
In a fit of rage, Low resorted to violence, initially striking his wife with a mop before escalating to using a bamboo pole.
Further details revealed that his wife retaliated by hitting Low’s hands with a separate bamboo pole intended for laundry. In a vicious cycle of violence, Low responded by hitting her multiple times on the head with a bamboo pole, ultimately drawing blood. It was only after seeing the injury that he ceased his attack and called the police for assistance. Their son, upon returning home, called for an ambulance.
Upon arrival, authorities found Low’s wife had sustained serious injuries, including a fracture of her nasal bone and left thumb. She was hospitalized for eight days following the incident and was later transferred to the Institute of Mental Health, where she continues to receive care for a long-standing diagnosis of schizophrenia as per the report.
The prosecution recommended a six-week jail sentence for Low, highlighting the aggravating factors of his intoxication and the use of an object in the assault against his wife. The prosecutor also noted that Low appeared to be experiencing caregiver stress while taking care of his wife, who suffers from schizophrenia, and mentioned that their son also has mental health issues.
Additionally, the prosecutor considered Low’s advanced age in the context of the case.
Representing himself, Low acknowledged his wrongdoing but expressed to the judge that his wife tends to speak negatively to him.
Under the law, an individual convicted of voluntarily causing hurt can face up to three years in prison, a fine of up to S$5,000, or a combination of both penalties. In cases where the offender is in an intimate relationship with the victim, the court has the authority to impose penalties that are double the maximum limit.
